Training Opportunities

Woodlands & Waterways EcoWatch is committed to ensuring that anyone who wants to help monitor their environment has the skills to do so. To accomplish this, we provide environmental monitoring training to locals, cottagers, and students to ensure that everyone has the skills they need. Details for upcoming events and training sessions will be listed here and regularly updated over the year.

Community-Based Benthic Monitoring Training – Spring/Summer 2022

This summer, we offered training to locals, cottagers, and post-secondary students to participate in our benthic biomonitoring program. This training program occurred through two modules: an online module and an in-person module. Participants learned more about the tiny, spineless (and arguably charismatic) organisms that we use to help determine the health of lakes throughout the Haliburton region. This training  provided those in attendance with the skills and knowledge to assist Woodlands & Waterways EcoWatch in sampling for benthic macroinvertebrates within the Haliburton region.

Thank you so much to Barb Elliot for instructing our volunteers and training them in proper OBBN protocol. A special shoutout to the Windy Pine Conference Centre for hosting our in-person workshops.

Keep an eye out for more training opportunities in the future!

Who can sign up?
This training program aims to provide interested locals, cottagers, and post-secondary students (18+) with the skills and knowledge required to assist our Trent and Fleming students with the collection, picking, and identification of benthic macroinvertebrates from Haliburton County lakes. As such, we are most interested in individuals who meet the following criteria:
  • Interest in working outdoors in the late summer to early fall
  • Willing to assist with benthic sampling between in September and October
  • Eager to learn about the aquatic environments of Haliburton County
We encourage all individuals to register for this training. Still, in a complete program, we will prioritize those willing to commit to assisting us with sampling between the listed dates.
